Montessori School Fair and Peace in Education Event
Fourteen Nashville area Montessori Schools are bonding together to promote Peace In Education and help families and educators understand the Montessori Method at the upcoming Montessori School Fair: Peace in Education event. The event is one of a series of individual and multi-school projects that are designed to educate globally and locally.
Nashville’s Montessori School Fair will be a free event, open to the public, and will be held Feb 21st from 10 am until 1pm at the Frist Lecture Center in the Inman Building on the Belmont University Campus. The event aims to answer the question “What Is Montessori?” as well as provide specific information on the Montessori Method, the Montessori Philosophy, and the location and information on many of the public and private schools available in the area.
The fourteen area schools bonding together to create this event, have been working locally, and some globally, to promote education in general, peace, and the Montessori philosophy of education. One of these efforts is this past fall’s first annual International Peace Day Celebration and parade, where Nashville children from multiple schools gathered, created a 15 foot peace dove and shared peaceful stories and music. The more global events have included education related trips to help schools in rural areas of China, Uganda and the Dominican Republic.
Dr Merrie King, Director of the Montessori Teacher Training Program at Belmont University, normally focuses on training Montessori teachers but for a short time last year, she travelled to China to provide feedback to a school and offer insight on how to improve their methods of teaching.
The passion for spreading peaceful education is a sentiment echoed by Deborah “Oma” Harris of The Montessori Centre, which is why her school helped fund and staff a trip to a developing Montessori school in Uganda created for orphans of the area. (see: http://vmontessori.com/donate.html)
The Nashville Montessori School Fair- Peace in Education Event will feature pictures/ presentations on some of these visits and events as well as provide additional insight into their impact.
“Our main hope is to spread the word that Montessori is a peace-oriented, highly refined system of education that respects the children it empowers;” says Debra Miller, co-organizer of the fair and Director of Mt Juliet Montessori Academy, “It will also provide a an opportunity to for families to personally connect with a school that may be perfect for their child.”
